Antibiotic Resistance
in Agriculture

"Antimicrobials misuse in the livestock sector, aquaculture and crop production is a major concern as a risk for emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant micro-organisms."

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Agricultural food production is a hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in the environment. Existing data suggests that antibiotic use in animals is as high, or in some countries even higher, as antibiotic use in humans. Antibiotic resistance can occur and develop in the gut microbiota of farmed animals and get released into the environment via animal waste. As most animal waste in agriculture is used as manure fertilizer for food production, there are concerns that antibiotic resistance may spread from Farm to Fork.

WHAT WE DO?

  • We help universities and research institutes detect and quantify hundreds of genes associated with antibiotic resistance and mobile genetic elements from agricultural samples such as manure, soil, milk, meat, swabs, dust, flies, and crops.
  • We help food production industry understand the impact of antibiotic use on animals, product quality, and the farm environment.
  • We help aquaculture farms monitor the development and spread of antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments
