Agricultural food production is a hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in the environment. Existing data suggests that antibiotic use in animals is as high, or in some countries even higher, as antibiotic use in humans. Antibiotic resistance can occur and develop in the gut microbiota of farmed animals and get released into the environment via animal waste. As most animal waste in agriculture is used as manure fertilizer for food production, there are concerns that antibiotic resistance may spread from Farm to Fork.
