Resistomap is organizing a series of live webinars from August to November 2021. The main theme of the event is: “The science and application of antibiotic resistance monitoring.” Based on the valuable feedback and requests we received from the webinar audience last spring, this Autumn Webinar Series will discuss and explore a wide range of topics, such as:

- The science behind monitoring antibiotic resistance in the environment
- Problematic antibiotic resistance genes in different environments
- Antibiotic resistance genes prevalent in nature
- Antibiotic resistance genes in human-impacted environments
- Antibiotic resistance monitoring in hospitals through wastewater

This webinar series aims to provide concrete information on the methods for monitoring antibiotic resistance from environmental samples, and to explore the prevalence of problematic antibiotic resistance genes in different environments. In addition, we will discuss the best strategies to protect human, animal, and environmental health from the emerging threat of antibiotic resistance through the One Health approach.
You can find the schedule for the Autumn webinars listed below:

Resistomap Spring Webinar Series

Webinar Series:
Monitoring ARGs in LMICs

One cornerstone of the global strategy against antibiotic resistance is to monitor the levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in hotspots where antibiotic resistance is developing and spreading. Despite the high burden of infectious diseases, ARG monitoring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is still relatively limited and fragmented. This lack of information makes it difficult to estimate the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in these countries and to develop effective strategies to mitigate the spread. Considerable efforts are thus urgently needed to improve surveillance in LMICs. This webinar series aims to improve public awareness on the importance of ARG monitoring and on the need to fill the surveillance gap in LMICs. We are inviting world-leading researchers and experts to offer insights based on their work on antibiotic resistance in the environment in LMICs, and to discuss best strategies to avoid further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance in the countries. Each webinar will focus on antibiotic resistance monitoring projects within a specific country or region. The dates of the webinars are as follows:

Resistomap Webinar Series

Resistomap Webinar Series:
Fighting Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment

To celebrate this year’s World Antibiotic Awareness Week, Resistomap is organizing a series of live webinars from August to November 2020. This webinar series aims to improve public awareness and understanding of antibiotic resistance and its environmental impact.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent threats to global health. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that antibiotic resistance in bacteria is leading to “a post-antibiotic era” in which antibiotics regularly fail and common infections are potentially lethal.

Inappropriate and heavy use of antibiotics leads to an increase in resistant bacteria. Hospitals, aquaculture, agriculture and pharmaceutical manufacturing sites are hotspots where antibiotics are ubiquitous. From these hotspots, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can enter the environment, for instance through wastewater or the spreading of manure to soil. This leads to the silent spread of resistance in the environment.

In the webinars, world-leading researchers and experts will offer insights based on their work on antibiotic resistance in the environment and discuss best strategies to avoid further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.
