Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today. Such a complex global challenge requires interdisciplinary joint-efforts to tackle the emergence and spread of organisms that become resistant to antibiotics. At Vienna University of Technology, Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management, we work with antibiotic resistance in water and wastewater. We combine knowledge from the fields of microbiology and molecular biology with engineering - water treatment technologies. Our projects focus on evaluation of chosen technologies for the removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes, on monitoring of wastewater treatment plants and surface waters for antibiotic resistance, and on looking at environmental bacterial communities and their resilience towards acquiring resistance. We use various tools, from culture-based methods to PCR, qPCR, NGS and CHIP technology.
Use of CHIP enabled us to collect data that we could not obtain by means of other methods and allowed us to monitor a broad range of genes in applied wastewater treatment steps.
